Former President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, has stated that four years is insufficient for a president to bring about meaningful development in a country.

Speaking at a leadership event in Ada, Ghana on April 24, 2025, Dr. Jonathan addressed ministers and government officials, arguing that the presidential term lengths in Nigeria and Ghana are too short compared to other African nations, where most presidents serve five-year terms.

“In Nigeria and Ghana, our presidents only get four years. What can someone really do in four years?” he questioned.

Dr. Jonathan elaborated that a new president typically requires at least one year to acclimate to the role, leaving only two full years to implement policies, as the final year is often focused on preparing for the next election.

He emphasized that this limited timeframe hampers leaders’ ability to plan and complete long-term projects crucial for national growth.
