Political scientist Dr. Richard Amoako Baah has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for its planned “Thank You Tour” following the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections. In an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Wednesday, April 23, he questioned the appropriateness of the tour after what he termed a “colossal defeat” in both the presidential and parliamentary elections.

“What is going on is not good. When you lose this colossally, you don’t go on a Thank You Tour. No, thank you for what? For not voting for me?” he remarked. “Instead, you say, ‘Sorry, forgive me.’ That’s what you do in this instance — and it’s not just for the flagbearer; all the party people should be doing that,” he insisted.

His comments came shortly after the NPP officially launched its Thank You Tour at the party’s national headquarters in Accra. The tour, led by the party’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is set to begin on Saturday, April 26, and will involve the party leadership traveling across the country to express appreciation to supporters.

Dr. Bawumia, who served as Vice President during the elections, faced a landslide defeat against the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer and current President, John Dramani Mahama. The NPP also lost significant parliamentary seats, diminishing its legislative influence.

Dr. Amoako Baah, known for his critical stance within the party, has previously urged the NPP to engage in serious introspection and reform following its electoral setbacks.

In response, NPP Director of Communications Richard Ahiagbah defended the tour, stating that it aims to reorganize the party’s members. He attributed the 2024 defeat to low voter turnout among party supporters and emphasized that the tour is intended to mobilize the party, address existing issues, and reignite passion for a return to power.
