In response to widespread social media reports alleging negligence in the death of a patient at the Accident and Emergency Ward of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh conducted an unannounced visit to the facility to assess the challenges in healthcare delivery.

During his visit on Tuesday, the Minister aimed to gain firsthand insight into the difficulties faced by health professionals in the Northern Region, starting with TTH, the only major referral hospital in Tamale.

In an interview, he expressed concern regarding the number of non-functional medical equipment at the hospital. He noted that despite payments to suppliers, many machines remain idle and unused.

The Minister also addressed President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to resolving the ongoing water crisis affecting healthcare delivery at TTH and throughout the region. He emphasized that the water issue extends beyond the hospital and is a top priority for the President.

“There are some issues that I will have to escalate to the President,” he stated. “The Tamale water incident is not just a health sector issue; it is a major priority area for the President.”

Regarding plans to replace faulty equipment, Akandoh explained that any interventions from his ministry would align with the priorities set by the hospital management. He encouraged residents to maintain their confidence in the hospital and utilize its services, assuring them of upcoming improvements in healthcare delivery.

“Please remain calm and continue to patronize the facility,” he urged. “We will work together to address these challenges.”
