Ghana’s Black Satellites have officially departed for the upcoming CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, set to take place in Egypt. The team, led by coach Desmond Ofei, left Kotoka International Airport on Saturday, April 19, as they prepare for their participation in the competition.
This journey follows months of preparation, as the Black Satellites secured their spot on the continental stage with a second-place finish at the WAFU B qualifiers last year, finishing behind eventual champions Nigeria in Togo.
A squad of 16 players traveled with the team, with additional foreign-based players expected to join them in Egypt. Before their departure, the team met with Kurt Okraku, president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), on Friday.
Ghana has been placed in Group C, alongside defending champions Senegal, DR Congo, and the Central African Republic. The tournament, running from April 27 to May 18, features 13 teams competing in three groups, with the Black Satellites facing a challenging schedule that could lead them through the quarterfinals, semifinals, and ultimately the final.
Additionally, this tournament serves as a qualifier for the next edition of the FIFA U-20 Men’s World Cup.
