Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, has inaugurated an eight-member Constitutional Review Committee. This marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s democratic development.
President Mahama emphasized the importance of updating the 1992 Constitution to ensure it remains relevant to the nation’s evolving needs. He described the Constitution as a “living document” that must adapt to Ghana’s changing social, political, and economic landscape.
“The strength of our democracy depends on its ability to adapt,” President Mahama stated. He clarified that the review process is not an admission of failure, but rather a recognition of progress and a commitment to ensuring that Ghana’s governance structures remain aligned with the aspirations of its citizens.
For over three decades, the 1992 Constitution has provided the foundation for Ghana’s democracy, guiding the country through periods of transition, growth, and development. However, as Ghana continues to mature, it is essential to address any gaps or ambiguities in the current framework.
President Mahama stressed that the review process is not driven by partisan interests, but rather a commitment to the nation’s well-being. “This exercise is about Ghana,” he said. “It’s about ensuring that our Constitution reflects the values, hopes, and dreams of every Ghanaian.”

The Constitutional Review Committee is chaired by Professor Henry Kwasi Prempeh, Executive Director of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development. The committee’s members include Justice Sophia Adinyirah, Dr. Godwin Djokoto, Mrs. Charlotte Osei, Dr. Esi Ansah, Prof. Kwame Karikari, and Mr. Ibrahim Tanko Amidu.
President Mahama urged the committee to approach their task with urgency and wisdom, emphasizing that their work will lay the foundation for Ghana’s future democratic development.
In response, Professor Prempeh assured the President and the nation that the committee will discharge its duties with diligence, integrity, and seriousness. He emphasized the committee’s responsibility to craft recommendations that will address present-day challenges and ensure Ghana’s continued progress in the years ahead.
