The government is exploring the possibility of extending the Student Loan Scheme to cover students enrolled in private tertiary institutions. This announcement was made during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed board members of the Student Loan Trust Fund on April 29, coinciding with the launch of a digital loan application platform aimed at streamlining access for students.
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu stated that the proposal aims to provide financial support to students in private universities, many of whom face similar economic challenges as their peers in public institutions but are currently ineligible for assistance.
“Government is considering expanding the Student Loan Scheme to students even in private tertiary institutions. So even for this year [2025], your remit is to look at what is obvious and natural within your mandate,” he explained.
Iddrisu emphasized that it is the desire of President John Dramani Mahama to broaden the scheme to include Ghanaians who are struggling, particularly those who, due to their inability to gain admission to public universities, have to attend private institutions. “But they are still Ghanaians. And this is a loan, payable by the students,” he added.
