Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, the Director of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) for its recent stance on a directive issued by Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie regarding the assignment of cases and court dates.
The GBA has urged the Acting Chief Justice to withdraw the directive concerning the allocation of courts and the scheduling of newly filed cases and applications, expressing concerns over the directive’s clarity and its potential impact on efficient justice delivery. In a statement dated April 26, the GBA referred to the directive as “uncertain” and cautioned that it could disrupt the judicial process.
In response to the GBA’s concerns, Tamakloe, during an interview on Citi Eyewitness News on Tuesday, April 29, argued that the Association’s public questioning of the Chief Justice’s administrative authority was unnecessary and could reflect inconsistency in its advocacy.
“The Bar is questioning Acting Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie on a directive related to the assignment of cases and dates. In fact, if the Bar had kept quiet, it would have been better,” Tamakloe expressed, showing disappointment at the GBA’s position.
He further questioned the motives behind the GBA’s statement, suggesting that the Association might be engaging in selective criticism. “What exactly is the Bar talking about? Is it a case of double standards?” he queried.
