The grassroots of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have expressed concerns over potential voter apathy in the Volta Region for the 2028 general elections, citing President John Mahama’s failure to appoint regional NDC executives and stalwarts to key public positions.

According to party members, the John Mahama-led administration’s refusal to reward the region for its electoral contributions has left them feeling neglected and disgruntled.

At a press conference in Ho, Edmond Amos Ameamu, Convener of the New Voter Forum, stated that while some individuals from Volta have been appointed, they lack connections to the party and did not support the NDC during the 2024 election campaign. He warned that this ongoing neglect of local NDC stalwarts could have serious implications for the party’s goal of maintaining power beyond 2028.

Ameamu echoed a call from the Volta Renaissance Forum, urging President Mahama to consider appointing dedicated party faithful who are recognized by the grassroots in the region. “We believe the Petitioners have a strong case that President Mahama needs to treat urgently by appointing NDC party executives and activists with strong grassroots ties. This will motivate the party base and help prevent voter apathy ahead of the 2028 elections,” he stressed.

He criticized the appointment of an “alien” as the acting Volta Regional Director of the National Health Insurance Scheme, labeling it a “slap in the face of hard work” and a betrayal of trust. “The grassroots, who worked tirelessly to secure this victory, have been patient amidst appointment neglect. However, we will not accept the imposition of individuals who did nothing to support our efforts,” he added.

Ameamu recommended that the party’s leadership convene a meeting with concerned stakeholders to address these issues and find lasting solutions. He urged collaboration between party leadership and the Regional Minister to ensure that NDC activists are appointed to avoid “mass action, including takeovers, demonstrations, and picketing” in the coming weeks.

Additionally, he called on local government leaders to create job opportunities for NDC supporters to motivate a base that is becoming increasingly disgruntled. He issued a one-week ultimatum for their concerns to be addressed, particularly regarding the reversal of the appointment of the Acting Volta Regional Director of NHIS, warning of potential civil action if their demands are not met.
