Ghana has once again made history in African youth football as the national U-15 girls’ team clinched the title at this year’s CAF Africa Schools Football Championship. Hosting the competition for the first time in the sub-region, Ghana entered the finals as favorites after an impressive campaign, while the boys’ team narrowly missed out on the final, losing 1-0 to Tanzania in the semifinals.
The final, attended by President John Dramani Mahama and CAF President Patrice Motsepe, took place at the University of Ghana Stadium. The Black Damsels quickly asserted their dominance against Uganda, with Christiana Ashiaku executing a brilliant solo run to set up Belinda Kpentey for the opening goal, igniting the home crowd.
Ghana doubled their lead with a calm finish from Daniella Abass, securing a commanding 2-0 advantage. Despite Uganda’s attempts to mount a comeback, the Ghanaian defense held strong, ensuring victory and the coveted trophy.
As champions, Ghana’s U-15 girls will receive a $300,000 cash prize, while Uganda, the runners-up, will be awarded $200,000. Both the boys’ and girls’ third-place teams will each take home $150,000.
In addition to the girls’ success, Ghana’s U-15 boys claimed the bronze medal after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Uganda. Meanwhile, Tanzania’s U-15 boys defended their title, triumphing over Senegal in a dramatic penalty shootout after a goalless draw. Former champions South Africa secured bronze in the girls’ division, edging Morocco 2-1 in the third-place playoff.
The four-day tournament showcased exciting youth talent across Africa and concluded a memorable hosting for Ghana with double podium finishes.
