The 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pinpointed voter apathy in six regions as a major reason behind the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.
During the third day of the NPP’s “Thank You” tour in the Ahafo Region on Monday, April 28, Bawumia emphasized the significant number of abstentions in these areas, which include Greater Accra, Ashanti, Eastern, Western, Bono, and Central regions.
He highlighted the abstention figures: Greater Accra accounted for 571,000, Ashanti had 489,000, Eastern recorded 258,000, Central had 230,000, Western saw 164,000, and Bono had 100,000 voters who did not participate. “These six regions were our problem, and they are our strongholds as well. The situation would have been different if they had come out to vote,” he stated.
In addition to voter apathy, Dr. Bawumia also cited several other factors contributing to the party’s loss, including the arrogance of power, the high cost of living, the failure to reshuffle government officials, the introduction of the E-Levy, and the controversial haircut policy.
