President John Dramani Mahama has officially sworn in the newly appointed service commanders of the Ghana Armed Forces as members of the Armed Forces Council. The swearing-in ceremony took place on Thursday at the Ministry of Defence, ahead of a scheduled Council meeting to discuss key matters including promotions and the retooling of the military.

The newly inducted commanders are:

  • Major General William Agyapong, Chief of Defence Staff
  • Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, Chief of Army Staff
  • Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing, Chief of Naval Staff
  • Air Vice Marshal Eric Agyen-Frempong, Chief of Air Staff

In his remarks, President Mahama emphasized the importance of professionalism, discipline, and integrity in the commanders’ duties, highlighting the critical role of the Armed Forces in safeguarding national peace and security.

The ceremony was attended by key members of the Armed Forces Council, including Minister for Defence Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for the Interior Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka, and Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. Also present were Secretary to the President Dr. Callistus Mahama, Presidential Advisor and Special Aide Joyce Bawah Mogtari, and other senior officials.

The Armed Forces Council is tasked with advising the President on matters relating to the organization and administration of the Ghana Armed Forces, including appointments, promotions, and personnel welfare. The Council is expected to convene regularly to address strategic concerns aimed at enhancing the operational capacity and readiness of the Armed Forces.
