Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has announced plans by President John Dramani Mahama to implement a compulsory foreign language course for second-year Senior High School (SHS) students by the end of this year.

This initiative, designed to enhance students’ global competitiveness, will allow learners to choose from a variety of international languages, including French, Spanish, German, and Chinese, based on their academic interests.

The announcement was made on Thursday, April 24, during the launch of the Free Sanitary Pads Programme initiative.

“It is the dream of John Mahama that starting from Senior High School Two, every Ghanaian student will have the opportunity to select one major foreign language to accompany their area of study. This will be included as part of the curriculum review,” the Minister stated.

Iddrisu emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader effort to reform Ghana’s educational curriculum under President Mahama’s leadership. He also revealed plans to integrate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education into the basic school curriculum for students in Primary Four through Six.

“Under President Mahama, by the end of this year, he is committing to the promotion of Mathematics, Science, and Engineering education (STEM). From Primary Four to Primary Six, STEM kits and resources will be introduced to expose learners to these critical subjects,” he explained.

These initiatives reflect the government’s renewed focus on enhancing the quality and relevance of education in Ghana.
