One person is in police custody after the discovery of an illegal mining site in Aowin Nkwanta, located in the Western North Region. The arrest occurred during a targeted operation by the special anti-galamsey police team in Nkrankrom village.
The police intercepted a pickup truck with an unlisted registration number and questioned the driver, who could not justify his presence in the forested area. After sustained interrogation, he led the police to a significant illegal mining site deep within the forest at Aowin Nkwanta, where he confessed to operating.
The police have secured the site, and the suspect is currently assisting with investigations. Additional searches will be conducted in the coming days, with efforts underway to recover excavators and other mining equipment believed to be concealed in the area.
This operation is part of intensified nationwide efforts to combat illegal mining and protect Ghana’s natural environment.
