The Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, has been officially suspended from her position following the establishment of a prima facie case against her, based on multiple petitions alleging misconduct.
This suspension came after President John Dramani Mahama received three separate petitions and, in accordance with constitutional provisions, referred the matter to the Council of State for advice.
The announcement, made public on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, was in line with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution and followed consultations with the Council of State.
In response to the situation, President Mahama has formed a five-member committee to investigate the allegations. The committee is composed of:
- Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, Justice of the Supreme Court – Chairman
- Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu Asiedu, Justice of the Supreme Court – Member
- Daniel Yaw Domelevo, Former Auditor-General – Member
- Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo, Ghana Armed Forces – Member
