Christians in Bawku came together to celebrate Easter, emphasizing love, peace, and sacrifice despite the ongoing chieftaincy conflict in the town. Correspondent Peter Agengre joined the congregation at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, where the Easter celebration was marked by reflection, charity, and gratitude, with parishioners contributing gifts to support their church.

Dressed in festive attire, attendees prayed for peace in Bawku, even as a curfew remains in effect. Many shared their thoughts with GBC News.

“Usually, on Easter days, we don’t close this early. Many activities have been cut short because of the curfew and our current circumstances. However, we are hopeful that by next year, the town will be safe, allowing us to celebrate Easter joyfully,” said Adams Taibatu Thelma.

“We didn’t even know we would be able to come to church today, but God has made it possible for us to celebrate this season. We give thanks to Him for His glory and pray that through His resurrection, lasting peace will return to Bawku,” added Sacristan Grace Felatiga.

Other parishioners also prayed for love, unity, and healing.

“This is a time when we can pray, and God will hear our prayers for peace in Bawku,” Elder Peter Asaal remarked.

“Let’s love one another—especially the people of the Bawku Municipality. Let’s care for each other and move beyond past grievances. Let this resurrection symbolize a new life for us to live in peace and harmony,” urged a member of the Catholic Women Association.

The Parish Priest of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Rev. Fr. Paul Kapochina, encouraged the faithful to reflect on Jesus’ sacrifice, praying for healing, forgiveness, and peace.

“The message of forgiveness must resonate in our hearts. Until we learn to forgive, there will never be peace. Revenge should not be part of us, as it leads to negative outcomes—only forgiveness brings peace,” Fr. Kapochina preached.

Currently, Bawku remains calm, with businesses operating as usual. Many pray that the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and His blood on the soil will ultimately resolve the security challenges in the area.
