Police officers in the Volta Region have successfully intercepted a significant shipment of ammunition during a routine check at the Tadzewu-Mitsrikasa barrier.
The incident occurred early on April 18, 2025, when a Hyundai bus traveling from Accra to Benin was stopped for inspection. Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered 132 cartons of ammunition concealed beneath passengers’ luggage. The haul included 60 cartons of AAA cartridges (15,000 rounds) and 72 cartons of BB cartridges (18,000 rounds).
Two men were arrested in connection with the shipment: the driver, Abasou Fousseni, 45, and his assistant, Salisu Jalilu, 38. Both men claimed ignorance regarding the hidden ammunition; however, initial investigations suggest that the co-driver may have been responsible for loading it onto the bus.
The driver has since been granted bail to continue the journey with the passengers, while the co-driver remains in police custody and is assisting with the investigation. He is expected to appear in court on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
