The Mamprugu Youth Association has urged the government to focus on diplomatic and peaceful solutions to the ongoing conflict between the Mamprusis and Kusasis in Bawku. The association raised concerns over the use of force, which they claim has led to the tragic loss of innocent lives, including both police and local youth.
During a press conference in Accra, Dr. Issah Imoro, the spokesperson for the association, stated that intimidation and violence from security forces will not deter the Mamprugu youth from their commitment to peaceful resolution. He called on Kusasi groups to pursue harmony through nonviolent means.
The association criticized Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno for his recent actions during a visit to Bawku, describing them as serious misjudgments likely influenced by inadequate advice. Dr. Imoro warned that any attempt to arrest Naa Sheriga Alhaji Seidu Abagre would face strong resistance, as it would infringe upon court rulings and fundamental human rights.
While recognizing the right of all communities to engage in economic activities safely, the Mamprugu youth pointed out the detrimental effects of a parallel market set up by the Kusasi. They alleged that certain Kusasi youth have resorted to intimidation and coercion, obstructing access to the market for others and mislabeling them as Mamprusis and their allies.
Dr. Imoro characterized this behavior as akin to domestic terrorism, noting that it has also affected Kusasi kin and international traders from Burkina Faso, Niger, and Togo, who have been barred from the Bawku central market, crucial for local revenue.
The Mamprugu Youth Association emphasized the need for collaboration to achieve a lasting resolution. They urged the media and stakeholders to avoid generalizing the actions of all Bawku youth, clarifying that the violence primarily stems from certain elements within the Kusasi youth.
