The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has issued a directive to all regional directors, demanding the immediate cessation of fees charged for the use of washrooms in health facilities. This announcement comes in response to a growing trend where patients are required to pay fees ranging from GH¢0.50 to GH¢2 for restroom access in various public health facilities across the country.
In a circular dated April 16, 2025, and signed by Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, the acting Director General of the GHS, the organization emphasized that such practices are unacceptable and must be stopped immediately. The GHS is committed to ensuring that access to basic sanitation facilities in hospitals remains free for all patients and visitors.
