The Mamprugu Youth Association has called on the government to pursue diplomatic and non-violent strategies to address the ongoing conflict between the Mamprusis and Kusasis in Bawku. The group highlighted the urgent need to avoid forceful measures, citing the tragic loss of innocent lives, including those of police officers and local youths, amid rising tensions.
During a press conference in Accra, spokesperson Dr. Issah Imoro emphasized the commitment of Mamprugu youths to seek a peaceful resolution, despite ongoing intimidation and violence from security forces. He urged Kusasi groups to also adopt peaceful approaches to foster lasting harmony
Dr. Imoro criticized the actions of Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, labeling his conduct in Bawku as a significant error in judgment that could jeopardize peace efforts. He warned against any attempts to arrest Naa Sheriga Alhaji Seidu Abagre, deeming such actions unjust and a violation of human rights.
The spokesperson raised concerns about a parallel market initiated by the Kusasi community, which has led to intimidation and coercion against individuals identified as Mamprusis. He described these actions as forms of domestic terrorism, pointing out that they restrict access to essential markets for Mamprusis, other ethnic groups, and international traders from neighboring countries.
The Mamprugu Youth Association believes that a collaborative approach is essential for a sustainable resolution and urged the media and stakeholders to avoid generalizing the actions of all Bawku youth. Dr. Imoro emphasized that the violence is largely instigated by Kusasi youth, who have publicly acknowledged their participation.
The group remains dedicated to achieving peace through dialogue and cooperation, calling on all parties to unite for the community’s progress.
