A group of concerned traders in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, has thrown their weight behind Hon. Kennedy Agyapong to become the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the next general elections. The traders, who are members of the NPP, expressed their preference for Kennedy Agyapong to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, citing the need for a change in leadership to reinvigorate the party.
According to Lawrence Adu, a member of the Concerned NPP Traders in Kumasi, the party’s recent defeat in the presidential and parliamentary polls is a clear indication that a new approach is needed. Speaking at a press conference in Bantama on February 4, Adu noted that, the expectation that Dr. Bawumia would secure votes from the northern regions and Islamic communities did not materialize, resulting in the significant losses for the party.
Adu emphasized that, the party’s performance in the recent elections was disappointing with losses in both the presidential and parliamentary polls. He attributed this to the fact that many NPP Christians did not vote, which greatly affected the party’s fortunes. The traders believe that Kennedy Agyapong, with his experience and reputation, is better positioned to lead the party to victory in the upcoming elections.
The endorsement of Kennedy Agyapong by the NPP traders in Kumasi is a significant development, as it highlights the growing dissatisfaction with the party’s current leadership. As the party prepares for its internal elections, it remains to be seen whether Kennedy Agyapong will emerge as the flagbearer and lead the NPP to victory in the general election.
